Whether you’re proud of your Irish roots, or just a die-hard Shamrock Shake fan, this post is for you! Personally, I fall into both categories. My heritage is mostly Scotch-Irish so I am always down with any celebration of those cultures. And I used to LOVE those infamous Shamrock Shakes! Basically, I love mint-flavored anything.
Unfortunately, the typical Shamrock Shake is not so great if you’re trying to stick to health goals. Did you know a 16 ounce (medium) Shamrock Shake contains up to 660 calories and 93 grams of sugar?! Plus, there’s 19 grams of fat, 76 milligrams of cholesterol and 210 milligrams of sodium.
Um, no thanks.
Even as delicious as it is, that’s just not worth it! 93 grams is nearly equal to 1/2 cup. That’s 23 teaspoons. Can you imagine eating that much sugar, straight? Yikes. There’s also a slew of other less-than-great ingredients in the Shamrock Shake, including high-fructose corn syrup and artificial colors and flavors.
Now I get that part of the appeal of the classic Shamrock Shake is that it’s a seasonal, celebratory treat. I’m all about balance – our family definitely participates in our share of holiday goodies!
But I’m also all about finding healthier versions of those foods. Delicious swaps that still fulfill the craving, but are wayyyy healthier. Because I know that the little decisions I make now will only add up. I want to model healthy habits for my kid! And I want to build my own healthy habits so that I can live a full and healthy life – as free from sickness and medical interventions as possible.
So with Saint Patrick’s Day around the corner and Shamrock season in full-swing, I decided to make my own healthier version of a Shamrock Shake – a Healthy Shamrock Smoothie. There are lots of recipes floating around out there on the web, but this one is my favorite!
My secret ingredients are:
banana + avocado + peppermint extract + baby spinach + vanilla life shake protein powder
I love that this Shamrock Smoothie is so healthy I can give it to my toddler. And since it’s so tasty, he actually likes it! Win!
In addition to being super creamy, minty, and delicious, this smoothie is:
- free of all artificial flavors and colors
- a full serving of vegetables
- a 1/2 serving of fruit
- 16+ grams raw, non-GMO plant protein
- full of pre/probiotics
- made with a balance of protein, fiber, and naturally occurring sugars – so there is no blood sugar spike and subsequent energy crash
This healthy shamrock smoothie is super easy to whip up and perfect for either a treat or a meal.
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 1/2 tsp peppermint extract*
- 2 scoops Vanilla Shaklee Life Energizing Shake Mix
- 1 cup packed baby spinach
- 1/4 large avocado (about 1/4 cup chopped)
- 1/2 medium banana
- 6 ice cubes
- Add all ingredients to a high speed blender in the order listed above**
- Blend on high until appearance is a smooth green and no small pieces of baby spinach are visible.
*Peppermint extract is strong, so a little goes a long way! Some people like extra mint flavor. I suggest starting with 1/2 tsp max and then adjusting to taste in increments of 1/8 tsp to find the perfect amount of mint flavor for your preference.
**It helps to put the avocado, banana, and ice on top of the spinach so that they weigh it down a bit and push it towards blender blades.
