Tiny Adventures – Working Out at Home

A while ago I posted about how our family has made some adjustments this year to improve our finances. One of those adjustments was canceling our gym membership. Eeeeek.

You guys, I’ve always liked going to the gym. Maybe because I grew up going to dance classes all the time. It just felt natural to go to a designated dance/workout location and focus all my energies on physical fitness for a couple hours, and then go home.

So when we made the decision to cancel our gym membership I was a little nervous. Granted, I hadn’t been using our gym membership much (having a toddler seems to cut back on free time… funny how that works), but I still was hesitant to cancel it. Paying for that membership every month was like a reminder to work out and make that gym payment worthwhile! Part of me felt like canceling the gym membership meant canceling physical fitness.  Continue reading “Tiny Adventures – Working Out at Home”

Why I No Longer Shop at Vitamin Stores

daily supplements

Once upon a time I shopped at the local vitamin store. It was spring semester during my junior or senior year of college and I felt like I should do something for my health. A cleanse or vitamins or something. And because I wanted to get my vitamins from a reputable place I went to a store that specialized in vitamin supplements. I figured this was probably better than going to the vitamin aisle of the grocery store.

The salesperson asked me questions about what I was looking for and sold me on some sort of cleansing system that involved prepackaged vitamins and powder to mix in my water. It was one of their best-selling products and kind of pricey. But I got a membership, so that saved me 10% or so and I walked out of the store feeling proud of myself for taking such proactive care of my health. Very adult of me.

And for a month or so I took those supplements regularly.

Did I experience a drastic change in health? Continue reading “Why I No Longer Shop at Vitamin Stores”

Whether you’re proud of your Irish roots, or just a die-hard Shamrock Shake fan, this post is for you! Personally, I fall into both categories. My heritage is mostly Scotch-Irish so I am always down with any celebration of those cultures. And I used to LOVE those infamous Shamrock Shakes! Basically, I love mint-flavored anything.

Unfortunately, the typical Shamrock Shake is not so great if you’re trying to stick to health goals. Did you know a 16 ounce (medium) Shamrock Shake contains up to 660 calories and 93 grams of sugar?! Plus, there’s 19 grams of fat, 76 milligrams of cholesterol and 210 milligrams of sodium.

Um, no thanks. Continue reading “Healthy Shamrock Smoothie”

How to Naturally Clean Hard Water Stains on a Bathroom Sink

We have a history, hard water stains and me. When I was growing up there was a time my family lived in an old farmhouse with a well and our water was so hard that it deposited reddish stains on our sinks, tubs, clothes, and even hair. These mineral deposits were hard to clean – even with strong chemical cleaners. I hated those stupid hard water stains!

I can remember one time when I was about 13 or 14 and it was my job to clean the family bathroom. I was determined to get the hard water stains off of the tub and shower. I used one of those scrubby sponges, powered cleaner, and I went to town. After much scrubbing, the tub and shower looked white again! I was pretty pleased with myself. The only problem was the scrubby sponge I used was so abrasive that it completely ruined the finish on the tub and the shower. Oops. (Sorry, mom!)
