Life Lately – April 2016 Edition

How is it already April? How is it already past the middle of April? Life – you move too fast sometimes.

I’m so excited that warmer weather has hit our area. I didn’t realize how much I have missed the sunshine this winter (mental note: take more Vita-D3 next winter!!). One of the things our family loves to do is take walks together. The fresh air, conversation, and gentle exercise make my soul happy!

And isn’t there something about setting foot out the front door that feels like a little adventure? There’s something about it… It makes me feel young and free. And there’s that feeling of anticipation – I never know quite what will happen. What will we find on a walk? Will it rain? Will we meet someone?

“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” ~ J.R.R. Tolkien

It’s been so fun to watch Ace experience the world in a whole new way. Last summer he wasn’t yet walking, so his outdoor experiences were limited to stroller rides and sitting in prickly grass. This month we’ve been able to go on several family walks and Ace actually likes to walk with Dave and me! We have to slow down a lot, but it is so cute watching him toddle along. He’s actually pretty good at walking long distances and will go quite a ways before he wears out and we have to carry him.

I’m grateful for the diversion of walking since life has been so.so.busy lately. Walking brings me a sense of calm. And I need all the calm I can get since Atticus has been super challenging. He’s been feeling all his feels. One minute he’s dancing and giggling and the next he’s wailing like his world has come to an end.

But when we’re walking, there’s nothing but wide-eyed wonder. I’m free to chase him and he’s free to explore. There’s no emails to type or mounds of toppling laundry to fold. It’s just us and the great outdoors. And for a little bit, I am able to be fully present.
